Choosing a therapist

Finding a therapist can be overwhelming. Looking at a counselling directory can bring up many therapists and feel like it is too difficult to narrow it all down.

Before you start, we recommend making a note of the top requirements you have, are you looking for someone who works with a specific area or areas, are you preferring to meet in person in an accessible location for you or someone who works online? You might also want to search by price or by someone who can work short or long term. You may also have a preference about the style of counselling,

Once you have identified available therapists we encourage clients to meet a few therapists to see who feels right for you. How would you feel sharing about yourself with that person? Do you feel understood and heard in an empathetic, non-judgmental way?

If you felt there was a problem in your work together or were finding therapy difficult, can you see yourself sharing about this with them?

In the end, especially if you meet a few people who seem good, the decision may be between several good options so we recommend going with your instincts.
